Downtown Core Project

The City of Fontana is proposing a new focused area in the Downtown Core via six new Form-Based Code zoning districts. The proposed Project, would in part, provide increased residential and mixed-use development opportunities and encourage a dynamic Downtown with active commercial uses to create a local and regional destination.

Purpose:
The City of Fontana received a grant from the State (SB2 Grant) to encourage housing and walkability in the Downtown area. De Novo Planning Group was selected as the consultant to draft an Environmental Impact Report (EIR) and Development Guidebook to encourage housing and commercial development in the Downtown. In addition to encouraging housing in the Downtown, the City is proposing to attract commercial development to create an attractive destination in the Downtown.

Timeline:
The Draft EIR is available for public review beginning on May 10, 2023 and ending June 26, 2023. The General Plan and Zoning Code amendments, along with the EIR, are anticipated to be scheduled for hearing at Planning Commission and City Council during summer of 2023.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Is Sierra Avenue going to be closed?

The project anticipates a pedestrian plaza on Sierra Avenue between Arrow Boulevard and Orange Way. The first phase would reduce this part of Sierra Avenue to two lanes, one lane going south and one going north. Eventually, the street will be closed to create a pedestrian plaza.
