Keep Fireworks Safe and Sane and Avoid the Pain

The City of Fontana, in collaboration with the San Bernardino County Fire Department, has a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to illegal fireworks in the city. 

Fines for possession and use of illegal fireworks range from $2,500 to $10,000. Residents are urged to purchase "Safe and Sane" fireworks to avoid fines, potential injury and property damage. 

All fireworks (including Safe and Sane) in unincorporated areas within Fontana and the area north of Summit Avenue are prohibited. Property within the city north of Summit Avenue, west of I-15 and east of Lytle Creek Road is deemed a high fire hazard area and do not allow fireworks per Article XIII, Sec. 15-616 (shown below).

What Are Safe and Sane Fireworks?

Safe and Sane fireworks are less likely to cause injury and generally do not explode or fly. The fireworks are identified by a State of California or State Fire Marshall registered logo (pictured left). Beware of individuals selling fireworks from homes or cars that only say "Safe and Sane." If a firework does not have the Safe and Sane logo, it is illegal. 

Sale and Use of Safe and Sane Fireworks 

Safe and Sane fireworks are only permitted to be purchased from 12:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. on June 28, and from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. daily on June 29 through July 5. Safe and Sane fireworks can only be used between 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m.on the days in which these fireworks are sold.

Illegal Fireworks and Fireworks Safety

Illegal fireworks are just that...illegal. Avoids fines up to $10,000 by keeping all fireworks out of the high fire hazard area north of Summit Avenue and keeping fireworks Sane and Sane in the city limits south of Summit Ave.

Sec. 15-616. - Safe and sane fireworks—Limitation on places and hours of discharge.

(a) It shall be unlawful to discharge any "safe and sane fireworks" except during the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. on the days on which said "safe and sane fireworks" may be sold.

(b) It shall be unlawful for any person to ignite, discharge, project or otherwise fire or use, any "safe and sane fireworks," or permit the ignition, discharge or projection thereof, upon or over or onto the property of another without his/her consent or to ignite, discharge, project or otherwise fire or make use of any "safe and sane fireworks" within ten feet or any residence, dwelling or other structure used as a place of habitation by human beings.

(c) The use of "safe and sane fireworks" in the city shall be limited to private property except as otherwise provided herein. No "safe and sane fireworks" shall be discharged on public, semipublic or private open areas such as parking lots, vacant property or in public streets or right of ways except in public parks and those areas approved by the fire chief. No fireworks shall be discharged in the "high fire hazard areas", more particularly described as follows: 

Property within the city which is west of Interstate 15, north of Summit Avenue, and east of Lytle Creek Road.
